counselling for young people
I am a young people's counsellor, experienced working with children, teenagers and young people around issues such as anxiety, self-harm, bullying, parental separation, problems at school and low mood - helping them to understand and communicate their emotions and to manage challenging behaviour. I am fully qualified and based in central Harrogate - about me
COVID-19 update - my meeting rooms have been changed to comply with social-distancing and I have restarted face-to-face counselling sessions.
why could young people need counselling ?
When children, teenagers and young people have problems in their lives, they may have difficulty in understanding or communicating their emotions, leaving them to feel angry, confused, or scared:
- parental separation
- bereavement
- stress
- bullying or being bullied
- problems in friendship groups
- problems at school
If they are not supported well enough to be able to communicate and think about their emotions, they can often discharge their feelings through difficult or challenging behaviour, or by withdrawing and loosing interest in their usual hobbies.
As children move into adolescence, with all its hormonal changes, sweet young children can turn into challenging teenagers, who know their own mind, become their own person and find their own direction. If all goes well, the move into adulthood allows young people to become fully rounded individuals, happy in their relationships and with their lives.
If things go wrong, teenagers can find themselves being troubled by:
- low self-esteem
- relationships breaking down with family members or friends
- anxiety or depression
- angry outbursts that make no sense
- persuaded to make poor choices by peer pressure
As a consequence, teenagers may change their behaviour – either becoming more angry and argumentative, or by withdrawing and spending endless hours alone and in their room. In some cases a young person may turn to alcohol or drugs to self-medicate, or they can express their emotions through anti-social behaviour or self-harm.
